Hello hello hello,
I’m about to tell you some hair tips I got from my mum. Like I have mentioned countless times, my mum has been a part of my hair journey since the beginning. For those who don’t know, she’s the one who cut my hair then months later my Dad and I cut hers off (it took a lot of convincing).
She keeps telling me about her natural hair and the tips she got from my maitu (great grandma) on taking care of hair natural hair and she practiced them until 2000, when she got her hair relaxed. Eggs were the first treatment she advised to do before and after I went natural.
Protein treatments are the most important thing for my hair; let me get ‘sciency’ again.
Hair is made up of keratin and protein from the hair follicle. The proteins have sulfur atoms. The sulfur atoms usually combine in twos forming disulfide bonds. If this bonds are in the same protein- in the same strand- it bends thus forming curls. The more the disulfide bonds, the more the curls. Fun lesson huh?
I talked about this in my hair types post. Here
Why it’s important to do egg protein treatments:
1. The protein in eggs strengthens individual strands and repairs any damage.
2. Presence of Vitamin A,B, folate and Biotin ensure growth of long healthy hair. Healthy hair grows about 1/2 an inch monthly, Biotin really helps with this.
3. The egg yolk is useful for moisturizing hair that appears dry.
4. Egg treatments help maintain your curl pattern.
How I do it:
Beat the egg with a tablespoon of honey and Olive oil. Separate my hair into 4 sections, detangle with water, then apply the egg treatment under a shower cap for as long as I can. I then rinse it off, shampoo and condition normally. I then apply a leave in conditioner and let my hair air dry in braids.
